Japanese barberry is a woody shrub with curving branches that have numerous sharp spines. The leaves are small, rounded, and arranged in clusters above the spines. Japanese barberry cultivars can range in colour from chartreuse, gold, maroon, and green.

Barberry bonsai are hardy species, be sure to choose an outdoor spot with plenty of sun or semi-shade. For a full array of colours in its foliage come autumn, full sun is advised.

Your Barberry should be left outside in full sun to part shade, they can tolerate coming inside for short (2-3 days) periods of time to impress your guests.

Water regularly to avoid the soil from completely drying out. Apply Bonsai Boy's Plant Nourishment fertiliser during the growing season.
